I think a major difference is that while torrents are illegal, the main people enforcing it are copyright holders. I think the discussion would change if the government would label people who build/use/distribute "illegal" models as terrorists.
Torrents can't be illegal right now, can they? Maybe in China, but Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc all advertise the ability to recieve their ISOs via torrent and even seed the torrent in varying capacities.

Using any network protocol to violate copyright law on the other hand, is and has been illegal. But it's the violation of copyright, not the network protocol.

The second part I speak from experience; got to ~2k before realizing this is out of the script range and started to break it up. Regardless, it would be almost impossible to get an SOTA LLM agent to ever do this.
It is very possible. Sol Max created a 17k line monolithic file in a prototype not long ago. If I didn't stop it and make it refactor everything it easily would have went to 60k. I think it's the default if you start a new project and don't define the architecture concretely with files and folders beforehand. Models have zero concept of architecture or long-term planning, they just band-aid the fastest immediate solution that gets them the reward.

This is still in line with his point; presumably, people who live in the building and pay rent will want construction cost to be as low as possible as it will help reduce the rent needed for a builder to break even. An ornate stonework is great for someone looking at it, but if it requires rent to be raised by 100 dollar a month for a tenant, most would rather it not be there.

I guess part of the problem is that being against being against anything for economic interests doesn't really rally anyone to your cause; everyone has to make a living doing something productive for society, and professions have come and gone all the time due to technological advances. In fact, when one thinks about it, the people that are losing their professions now were major contributors to others losing their form of income. Often people talk about how they can use technological/programming/IT skills to make some secretary or administrative assistant's job obsolete. So most people just don't feel a lot of sympathy when people complain that AI are going to take those people's jobs.

Firefox mobile has extensions. I didn't get any ads because of ublock origin. No idea how people browse the web without adblockers. Not only because they are an assault on your attention, which is an important resource, but also because of the scams and security implications of ads.

I think there is a system to do this with git annex that will just keep the hash link in a repo but have the file in a offline drive, so you can easily keep track of files that are in cold storage. It may need you to have your own encryption system though.
