This has been the case since iPhone X. In all previous generations Apple was always the more natural looking profile. Since then they lost to the Instagram user base demands and started this over processing photos. They walk back some of it in the past 5 years but it is still extremely over processed in my view.

And it sort of reach a plateau where for normal consumer it doesn't matter much other than zoom. Which is important to a certain extend.

I wish there is some tech in the pipeline, that in the next 5 - 10 years we could get decent pictures quality without the huge bump.

Great Video. I think I watched something similar 2 - 3 years ago. And he basically stated ( again ) what went wrong with Apple giving Jony Ive the design of overall user interface.

You might want to take a look at Odin as well.

Well first A20 Pro didn't get wider, it actually shrink back to 9 decode width. It would be a lot better to compare it on the A silicon rather than M.

Second is that Apple's improvement were done when they were state of the art and leading the pack. This is a lot harder than when you are behind and being shown how much more room to grow.

The A20 Pro is the largest leap in performance in recent or perhaps in all of Apple SoC history. It doesn't get enough credit and attentions that it deserves.

Compared this to the article "How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?" The Zen 3 uArch being used in the article came out in 2020. So it is more like AMD got 50% faster in 5 years.

And perhaps this also answer and refer back to the previous HN submission and comments as to why ARM Mac are slower on SVT-AV1 encoding. Apple's SIMD performance is still behind AVX-512. But it is for good reason though and the trade off IMO is well worth it.

>Planetscale acting in their own self interest by improving postgres upstream isn't deserving of thanks,

And that is in the context of

>Fully proprietary no issue with that,

I guess I learned something new everyday.

Making one isn't "that" hard once you factor in China's production capabilities. The problem isn't even making it, the hardware part. ( Ignoring IP for a second )

Once you have all that, it is how do you sell it, and sell enough unit to even have a ROI. And that is ignoring UI / software.

I don't think people on HN understand, hardware business is brutal.

I know these are all Mac CPU, but for context people may want to look at A20 Pro [1], which in 2 years time will be in MacBook Neo. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

A20 Pro is around 4K on Geekbench 7. And the P-Core is not the same as M6. The A20 Pro is actually only 9 wide compared to 10-wide on M6. Supposedly more power efficient and smaller die size.

A20 Pro would have been number 1 if it was included in that chart.

Just want to add apart from all the other comments. SVT was brought by Intel and spent years to make it extremely well tuned for x86. While not the same for ARM and not even for Apple.

Another point is that the multicore part uses all core including E-Core. On AMD the multicore are all the same. Meaning for some benchmarks this will flavour Apple more.

Again there is nothing that stop people from optimising it for ARM Mac. The problem is the usage of it is so small it probably doesn't make sense to focus on it. SVT took a really long time for it to reach quality parity with AOM's AV1 encoder and later exceed it.
